Who is Cid?

Every Final Fantasy game has a Cid, and FFXI is no exception. Cid is Bastok's legendary engineer and inventor -- the brilliant mind behind much of the Republic's technology. He runs the Metalworks research facility and plays a key role in multiple storylines. As a trust, he trades his wrench for a grimoire and fights as a Scholar focused on healing.

Key Abilities

• Light Arts — Scholar is a unique job that can switch between two modes: Light Arts (healing/support) and Dark Arts (offensive magic). Cid stays in Light Arts, which means he focuses on healing. In Light Arts mode, healing spells cost less MP and cast faster.
• Cure spells — Standard healing magic that restores HP to injured party members. As a Scholar in Light Arts, his Cures are efficient on MP.
• Regen — A heal-over-time spell. Instead of restoring HP all at once like Cure, Regen gradually restores a small amount of HP every few seconds for a set duration. This is great for topping off the tank between big hits.
• Raise — Revives a fallen party member. This is a critical ability -- if you die during a fight, Cid can bring you back without forcing you to respawn at your home point and lose progress.
• Protect and Shell — Standard defensive buffs that reduce physical and magical damage taken.

When to Use Cid

Cid is a solid alternative healer. His Scholar job gives him efficient MP usage through Light Arts, which means he can sustain healing for longer fights without running out of MP as quickly. He also has both Raise and Regen, giving him a well-rounded healing toolkit.

He is a good choice if you want a healer who is a bit different from a straight White Mage. However, for the hardest content, Nashmeira II is still the stronger pick thanks to her Afflatus Solace-enhanced Cures.

Cid is available in Set 4, so he is accessible before Nashmeira II (Set 5) but after Karaha-Baruha (Set 1). He makes a good mid-game healer upgrade.
