Who is Gilgamesh?

Gilgamesh is the Emperor of the Aht Urhgan Empire, one of the most powerful nations in Vana'diel. Behind his role as ruler lies a fearsome warrior who has mastered the way of the samurai. He is a central figure in the Treasures of Aht Urhgan storyline, and his true strength is revealed as the story progresses. When he takes the field, he fights with the disciplined fury of a master swordsman.

Key Abilities

• Hasso — a stance that increases attack speed and accuracy while wielding a two-handed weapon (like a great katana). This is the core Samurai buff. Faster attacks means more TP, which means more weapon skills. Hasso is what makes Samurai one of the best TP-building jobs in the game.
• Meditate — instantly grants a large chunk of TP. In FFXI, TP (Tactical Points) builds up as you attack and is spent on powerful weapon skills. Meditate lets a Samurai skip the buildup and go straight to using a weapon skill. This ability has a cooldown, so Samurai alternate between normal attacking and Meditate bursts.
• Strong weapon skills — Gilgamesh uses powerful great katana weapon skills that deal heavy damage. Combined with his fast TP generation, he uses weapon skills frequently.

Understanding Samurai

Samurai is the premier "weapon skill spam" job in FFXI. The entire job revolves around building TP as fast as possible and then spending it on devastating weapon skills. Hasso makes your normal attacks faster (so you build TP faster), and Meditate gives you instant TP (so you can use weapon skills sooner). The result is a melee DD that uses weapon skills more often than almost any other job. If you are new, think of Samurai as the "special attack machine" — they use their big moves constantly.

When to Use Gilgamesh

Gilgamesh is one of the stronger melee DD trusts. His Samurai kit gives him excellent sustained damage through frequent weapon skills, and Hasso plus Meditate keep his TP flowing. He is a great pick for any content where you want reliable physical damage. He pairs especially well with trusts that can open or close skillchains with him.
